Why I chose Talalla Retreat and Jasper House

My stay at Talalla Retreat  was such a special experience. It’s a place that feels truly connected to its surroundings—very simple accommodation tucked among the trees, and the sound of the waves rolling in from the beach reminds you that you’re right in the heart of real Sri Lanka. The buildings are unassuming—wooden structures where you eat and practice yoga. There’s no pretence, just a genuine, peaceful vibe that encourages you to relax and truly be yourself. It’s a place that lets you breathe and connect with nature, free from distractions.

Jasper House was such a refreshing contrast to Talalla, that I couldn’t help but want to package these two properties together. Set at the top of a sand track, it’s a simple yet charming place, with airy rooms and a small à la carte restaurant. Just below is the most incredible horseshoe-shaped bay, which has humbly risen back from the Tsunami. There are simple wooden structures for hiring surfboards and grabbing a bite to eat, giving it a laid-back, authentic vibe. The sunset bar quickly became my favourite spot—a perfect place to quietly and thoughtfully say goodbye to the day as it sets over the bay. It’s one of those places where time slows down, and everything feels just right and you just cannot imagine coming home!
